The sentence on the wall was written in thick black strokes.
“MAYA, IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOUR GRANDFATHER LIED ABOUT WHY HE CREATED THE TRUST.”
Below it was tomorrow's date.
Maya stood motionless in the doorway.
Elena moved beside her.
“That's his handwriting?”
Maya nodded.
“I've seen it on the letters.”
Daniel swept his flashlight across the unit.
The place looked abandoned in a hurry. Cardboard boxes lay open, folders had been ripped apart, and a metal bucket still held the last orange glow of burning paper.
“Whoever was here didn't have time to clean up,” Daniel said.
Maya looked at the wall again.
“Or they wanted us to see that.”
He didn't dismiss the possibility.
He walked to the bucket and carefully pulled out what remained of the paper.
Most of it had turned to ash.
One fragment survived.
A date.
And part of a name.
“Vale,” Daniel said.
Maya crouched beside a box.
The label read: PROPERTY — 1998–2003.
She opened it.
Inside were deeds, tax records, bank correspondence, and several photographs.
Elena picked up one photograph.
It showed their grandfather standing beside Thomas.
A younger version of their father stood several feet behind them.
Maya turned the photograph over.
Three words had been written on the back.
“Before the betrayal.”
She looked at Elena.
“This was taken before Thomas disappeared.”
Daniel examined another document.
“This company appears repeatedly.”
Maya read the name.
“Northstar Holdings.”
Daniel nodded.
“It owned several properties your grandfather transferred into the trust.”
“Why?”
“I don't know yet.”
They opened another box.
This one contained correspondence between their grandfather and a bank.
Maya recognized the account number from the old notebook.
Daniel compared the numbers.
“Same trust.”
Maya felt a knot forming in her stomach.
“So Granddad didn't just leave me money.”
“No.”
“He moved assets.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Daniel looked through the documents.
“Maybe because he expected someone to come after them.”
A folded piece of paper slipped from the bottom of the box.
Maya opened it.
There was a list of names.
Thomas Vale.
Margaret Shaw.
Her grandfather.
Her father.
And one name she didn't recognize.
Richard Harlan.
Daniel went still.
“You know him?”
“Yes.”
“Who is he?”
Daniel took a breath.
“He was one of your grandfather's attorneys.”
Maya frowned.
“Was?”
“He died twelve years ago.”
Elena pointed to the list.
“Why is he here?”
“Because he handled the original trust.”
Maya looked at the date beside his name.
It was written in red.
Tomorrow's date.
Her pulse quickened.
Someone had updated the list recently.
Daniel folded the page.
“We're leaving.”
Maya shook her head.
“Not yet.”
“There could be someone watching this place.”
“That is exactly why we need to find whatever they're afraid we'll find.”
They continued searching.
Behind a stack of old furniture was a narrow metal cabinet.
The key fit.
Inside was a recording device.
Maya stared.
“That's old.”
Daniel pressed the power button.
A red light blinked.
There was one recording.
They listened.
Her grandfather's voice filled the storage unit.
“If you're hearing this, then I failed to keep the family from repeating my mistakes.”
Maya closed her eyes.
The recording continued.
“I created the trust because my son believed he could repair what I had damaged. He could not.”
Elena looked at Maya.
Their grandfather continued.
“The money belongs to Maya and Lydia separately. It was never intended to fund my son's debts.”
Maya's chest tightened.
“Lydia,” Elena whispered.
The recording went on.
“Thomas knows where the remaining records are. If he has not returned, it means the danger remains.”
There was a pause.
Then their grandfather said something that made Maya straighten.
“The person responsible is not the person you have been taught to fear.”
The recording ended.
Elena looked at Daniel.
“What does that mean?”
He shook his head.
“We need the rest.”
“There is no rest.”
Maya picked up the recorder.
“Then we find Thomas.”
They returned home shortly before midnight.
Nobody slept.
Maya sat at the kitchen table with the documents spread around her.
Elena sat opposite.
Daniel worked through copies of the property records.
At two in the morning, he found something.
“Look.”
He pointed to a transfer.
Northstar Holdings had purchased a property from Maya's grandfather for one dollar.
One year later, the same property had been sold for nearly two million.
Maya frowned.
“Who bought it?”
Daniel followed the chain.
“The buyer was a company called Harlan Legal Services.”
Elena stared.
“Richard Harlan.”
“Exactly.”
Maya leaned back.
“So the attorney who created the trust was also buying the family's property.”
Daniel nodded.
“That looks like a conflict.”
“Looks?”
“It needs to be proved.”
Maya studied the documents.
“Could Dad have known?”
“Probably.”
Elena whispered, “Maybe that's why he blamed Thomas.”
Maya looked at her.
“Thomas may have discovered Harlan.”
Daniel nodded.
“And your father may have been caught between them.”
The theory explained some things.
Not enough.
At sunrise, Maya received a message from an unknown number.
“Stop searching for Thomas.”
She showed Elena.
A second message arrived.
“Your father already paid the price.”
Maya's phone rang.
It was her father.
She answered.
“Where are you?”
“I need to see you.”
“Why?”
“I know about the storage unit.”
Maya's blood went cold.
“How?”
“I own it.”
“You said you didn't know what was there.”
“I lied.”
Maya stood.
“What else have you lied about?”
Her father was silent.
Then he said, “Everything that kept you alive.”
The call ended.
Maya stared at the screen.
Elena stepped closer.
“What did he say?”
Maya looked at the window.
“We're going to see Dad.”
Daniel shook his head.
“Not alone.”
Maya nodded.
This time, she didn't argue.
Before they left, she copied every important document.
She also photographed the message on the wall.
At the door, Elena stopped.
“Do you think Dad really protected us?”
Maya looked at her sister.
“I think he did terrible things while telling himself they were necessary.”
“That sounds like an excuse.”
“It is.”
Maya opened the door.
“But it may also be the truth.”
They walked toward the car.
Neither noticed the dark sedan parked across the street.
Inside, a man watched them leave.
On the passenger seat beside him lay a photograph.
It showed Maya's grandfather, Thomas, and a newborn child.
On the back was written:
“Tomorrow.”
