PART 12 – Harlan Was Alive and Watching From the Shore, but Thomas Finally Appeared With Proof That Could Destroy the Entire Network Behind Maya’s Stolen Inheritance

The boat crossed the river slowly.

Nobody spoke.

Maya kept looking back.

Harlan remained beside the cabin until the trees swallowed him from view.

Daniel steered toward the opposite bank.

Her father sat hunched over, breathing heavily.

Elena stared at the photograph of Thomas.

“He's alive.”

Maya nodded.

“And Harlan is too.”

Daniel said nothing.

When they reached the other side, a man stepped from the trees.

Older than the photograph.

Gray hair.

A weathered face.

But Maya knew immediately.

Thomas.

He looked at Elena first.

His eyes filled.

Then he looked at Maya.

“You shouldn't have come.”

Maya stepped toward him.

“You knew about me.”

“Yes.”

“You knew about my inheritance.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father was taking money.”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't you stop him?”

Thomas looked toward her father.

“Because stopping him would have exposed you.”

Maya laughed bitterly.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Thomas accepted the anger.

“You have every right.”

Elena approached him.

“Are you really my father?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Yes.”

She searched his face.

“Why did you let me believe otherwise?”

“Because your life depended on it.”

“That's what they all say.”

“I know.”

Elena looked away.

Thomas did not reach for her.

He seemed to understand that he had no right to demand affection from someone he'd left behind.

Maya watched them.

Then she noticed Thomas carrying a metal case.

“What is that?”

“The reason Harlan is afraid.”

He set it on a tree stump.

Inside were original ledgers, bank records, photographs, and legal documents.

The evidence connected Harlan to dozens of fraudulent property transfers.

But one document stood apart.

Thomas handed it to Maya.

It was her grandfather's final trust agreement.

The original.

Maya read it.

Her inheritance had never been limited to money.

Her grandfather had placed ownership of several properties into the trust.

Including the mill.

Including the house where Thomas had lived.

And one company.

Northstar Holdings.

Maya looked up.

“I own this.”

“Yes.”

Her father nodded.

“Your grandfather wanted you to have control.”

Maya turned another page.

There was a clause requiring the trustee to report any unauthorized withdrawals.

Margaret had never received those reports.

“Someone suppressed the records.”

Thomas nodded.

“Harlan.”

“Then why is my father listed as trustee?”

“He wasn't.”

Maya looked at him.

“What?”

Thomas pointed to the signature.

The trustee was Richard Harlan.

Her father had never legally controlled the trust.

The power-of-attorney document he'd brought to Maya had been meaningless.

Her father had been stealing money from an account he didn't legally control.

Maya turned to him.

“You knew?”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You signed the transfers.”

“I was told I had authority.”

“By Harlan.”

“Yes.”

Daniel took the document.

“This changes everything.”

Thomas nodded.

“It does.”

Maya looked at the evidence.

“Then why did Granddad trust Harlan?”

“He didn't.”

Thomas opened another folder.

Inside was a letter.

Your grandfather discovered Harlan was stealing from the family. He planned to remove him as trustee.

“But he died before he could.”

“Yes.”

“Was he murdered?”

Thomas hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Maya's heart tightened.

“You said he wasn't innocent.”

“He wasn't.”

“But did Harlan kill him?”

“We never proved it.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“We can prove financial crimes.”

Thomas nodded.

“But not murder.”

Maya closed the folder.

“That may be enough.”

Thomas looked at her.

“Not if Harlan has people inside the system.”

“What do you mean?”

“He has spent years making sure evidence disappears.”

Maya remembered the storage unit.

The missing documents.

The broken lock.

The burning papers.

“Then we don't give him a chance.”

She took out her phone.

Daniel understood.

“Back everything up.”

Maya began photographing the documents.

Elena sat beside Thomas.

“Do you regret leaving?”

Thomas looked at her.

“Every day.”

“Then why didn't you come back?”

“Because I believed you were safer without me.”

Elena's eyes filled.

“You don't get to decide that anymore.”

Thomas nodded.

“No.”

She looked at him.

“Then stay.”

Thomas closed his eyes.

“I will.”

A branch cracked behind them.

Daniel spun around.

Nobody was there.

Then a phone rang.

Maya's.

Unknown number.

She answered.

Harlan's voice came through.

“You've found enough.”

Maya stared across the river.

“You're going to prison.”

He laughed softly.

“You still don't understand.”

“What?”

“Your grandfather's money was never the real prize.”

Maya's grip tightened.

“Then what was?”

Harlan paused.

“You.”

The line went dead.

Maya lowered the phone.

Thomas's expression changed.

“What did he say?”

“He said I was the prize.”

Thomas stood immediately.

“We leave now.”

“Why?”

“Because the trust contains something Harlan has been looking for since your grandfather died.”

Maya looked at the original agreement.

“What?”

Thomas pointed to a paragraph near the end.

A hidden beneficiary.

A final asset.

Maya read the description.

Her face went still.

The asset wasn't property.

It wasn't money.

It was a complete record of every transaction Harlan had ever concealed.

A master ledger.

And according to the trust, only Maya could legally access it.

Thomas looked at her.

“Harlan has spent twenty years trying to find that ledger.”

Maya folded the document.

“Then let's find it first.”
