PART 4 – Mara Returned With a Warning, but the Truth She Carried Forced Me to Choose Whom I Could Still Trust

I kept the door locked.

Mara waited on the porch without knocking again.

Leo stood behind me, trembling.

"Why won't you let me see her?"

"Because she told me not to."

He looked confused.

"She wouldn't say that."

"She just did."

I opened the door only enough to speak through the gap.

Mara stepped closer.

"Is he inside?"

"Yes."

Her eyes closed briefly.

"Then we don't have much time."

"Who is after you?"

"Daniel."

"He's already been here."

She flinched.

"Did he see Leo?"

"No."

"Good."

I held up the letter.

"Your name is all over this."

Mara looked at it and went pale.

"You found the box."

"I did."

"Then he knows."

"Who is Evelyn?"

"My aunt."

"What happened to her?"

Mara looked over her shoulder.

"She disappeared."

"Because of the ledger?"

"Because she tried to expose it."

I opened the door another inch.

"Start explaining."

She stepped onto the threshold.

"Daniel found out what Evelyn discovered about the land. He became obsessed with finding the ledger because he believes it proves something about his own family."

"What?"

"That his father helped destroy people's lives."

"That's why he wants my house?"

"He doesn't care about the house."

She glanced toward the floor.

"He wants what's beneath it."

Behind me, Leo whispered, "Mom."

Mara froze.

Then she entered.

Leo ran toward her.

She caught him and held him tightly.

For several seconds, the room contained nothing but the sound of his breathing.

"I thought I'd lost you," she whispered.

"You told me not to come home."

"I know."

"Dad found me."

"I know."

"How?"

Mara looked at me.

"He followed me here."

My stomach tightened.

"What?"

"He saw me leave your street this morning."

"Then why come back?"

"Because I couldn't leave you with my son without telling you the truth."

She released Leo and took his face between her hands.

"Listen to me. Whatever happens tonight, you stay with Mr. Hale."

Leo nodded.

"Why?"

"Because your father believes the ledger is here."

I held up the brass key.

"Is this the key to the room?"

"No."

Her answer was immediate.

"It's the key to something inside it."

I looked at the cellar door.

Mara followed my gaze.

"The entrance is behind the north wall."

"Your recording said that."

Her expression changed.

"You listened to it?"

"Yes."

"Then you know more than I hoped."

She walked toward the cellar.

I followed.

Leo stayed close behind.

The basement smelled of damp stone and old wood. A single bulb hung from the ceiling. Along the north wall, decades of paint covered the bricks.

Mara counted them.

"Thirty-two."

"What?"

"Bricks from the floor."

She pointed.

"Count upward."

I did.

At the thirty-second row, one brick was slightly darker.

I pressed it.

Nothing.

Mara took the key marked 17.

"Try the symbol."

There was a tiny metal plate hidden between two bricks.

I inserted the key.

A mechanism clicked.

Somewhere inside the wall, something heavy moved.

The brick shifted inward.

A narrow opening appeared.

Cold air came through.

Leo whispered, "There's a room."

We widened the opening enough to pass through.

Behind the wall was a corridor barely four feet wide.

Its floor was covered with dust.

No one had walked there recently.

At the end stood a steel door.

Mara stopped.

"This is where Evelyn came."

"How do you know?"

"She left instructions."

The key did not fit the steel door.

Instead, there was a small circular slot beside the handle.

Mara removed the cassette recorder from my pocket.

"Turn it over."

There was a compartment underneath.

Inside was a second key.

I stared at her.

"You knew this was here."

"I hoped it was."

She inserted it.

The door opened.

Inside was a room no larger than a bedroom.

Shelves covered three walls.

Boxes sat in rows.

Documents filled the rest.

At the center stood a wooden table.

On it was a ledger.

Mara approached it slowly.

"This is what Daniel has been looking for."

She opened the cover.

Names filled the pages.

Dates.

Payments.

Property transfers.

And beneath them, records of children moved between households under false identities.

Leo stepped closer.

Mara turned pages.

Then she stopped.

Her hand began to shake.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

I looked down.

There were three entries.

*Child A — Nora Vale.**

*Child B — Elias Vale.**

*Child C — Leonard Hale.**

I stared at the final name.

Hale.

My surname.

Leo looked at me.

"Mr. Hale?"

I couldn't speak.

Mara covered her mouth.

"My aunt was right."

"What does this mean?"

She turned the page.

There was another entry.

*Guardian: Thomas Hale.**

My father's name.

The room seemed to tilt.

My father had been dead for fifteen years.

I remembered the stories he told me about this property. How he had purchased it cheaply after the old development company collapsed. How he had always refused to discuss the previous owners.

I remembered something else.

He had never allowed me to enter the north cellar wall.

Not once.

A sound came from the corridor.

Footsteps.

Mara closed the ledger.

Leo grabbed her hand.

Someone was walking toward us.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Then Daniel's voice echoed through the passage.

"You finally found it."

Mara looked at me.

I looked at Leo.

And Daniel stepped into the doorway holding a gun.
