PART 6 – The Door Would Not Hold Forever, and the Next Name in the Ledger Explained Why Someone Still Wanted Leo

Daniel shoved the table against the steel door.

The shelves rattled as the impact came again.

"How many people?" I asked.

"At least two."

Mara pulled Leo toward the far wall.

"There's another exit."

Daniel looked at her.

"Where?"

She pointed toward the rear shelves.

"Evelyn's map."

I understood immediately.

The old drawing had shown a narrow passage extending beyond the hidden room.

Daniel moved the nearest shelf.

Behind it was another section of brickwork.

He ran his hands along the wall.

"Nothing."

Mara joined him.

"The map said the passage was behind the shelves."

"Which shelf?"

"The one marked with a circle."

We searched.

There were dozens of boxes.

Then Leo pointed.

"That one."

A small circle had been carved into the wood.

Daniel pulled the shelf forward.

A narrow wooden door appeared.

The noise at the steel door became louder.

"Open it," Mara said.

Daniel tried the handle.

Locked.

I held up the brass key.

The number 17 caught the light.

"It opened the first door."

"Try it."

I inserted the key.

Nothing.

Then I remembered the symbol beside the number.

A circle divided by a vertical line.

I pressed the center of the symbol.

The key turned.

The door opened.

Cold air rushed into the room.

One by one, we slipped through.

I went last.

Before leaving, I grabbed the ledger.

Daniel noticed.

"Good."

He pulled the door shut behind us.

We entered a cramped tunnel lined with old stone.

Water dripped somewhere ahead.

Behind us, the steel door finally gave way.

Someone shouted.

"Daniel!"

He didn't answer.

We kept moving.

The tunnel sloped downward.

Leo held Mara's hand.

Daniel walked behind them, glancing back every few seconds.

I carried the ledger beneath my jacket.

After perhaps fifty yards, the tunnel widened.

A wooden staircase rose toward a hatch.

Daniel pushed it open.

We emerged inside my garden.

Rain had stopped.

The sky was darkening.

For a few seconds, none of us spoke.

Then Mara looked at the house.

"We can't go back inside."

"Why?"

"Because they know where the tunnel comes out."

Daniel looked toward the street.

Two headlights appeared beyond the hedge.

A car stopped.

Another followed.

Daniel's expression hardened.

"They're here."

Mara pulled Leo behind her.

I recognized the first car.

It belonged to a man who had visited Daniel's house several times.

I had seen him once at the grocery store.

Daniel saw my expression.

"You know him?"

"No."

"You've seen him."

I nodded.

"That's enough."

The cars remained at the curb.

No one got out.

Daniel took the ledger from me.

"There's something you need to see."

He opened it beneath the porch light.

The final section contained a series of codes.

Names were replaced with numbers.

But one number appeared repeatedly.

17.

I looked at him.

"What does it mean?"

"Not the key."

He pointed to the page.

"The house."

My house.

The property had been listed as Parcel 17 long before the street received its current name.

I read the next entry.

*Parcel 17 — temporary guardian residence.**

Below it:

*Child transferred: Leonard Hale.**

Then:

*Status: unresolved.**

Mara leaned over my shoulder.

"What does unresolved mean?"

Daniel turned another page.

There was a note.

*Child must remain hidden until original guardian returns.**

Mara stared at it.

"Original guardian?"

Daniel nodded.

"Your father wasn't supposed to keep Leo permanently."

I looked at the date.

"2007."

"Yes."

"That's nineteen years ago."

"Correct."

I looked at Leo.

He was watching us.

"Who was supposed to return?"

Daniel turned the page.

There was a name.

*Evelyn Vale.**

Mara's face crumpled.

"She was alive."

Daniel said nothing.

The realization hit all of us at once.

If Evelyn had been scheduled to return for Leo, then her disappearance had not been an accident.

Someone had prevented her from coming back.

I looked at Daniel.

"You said she died nine years ago."

"Yes."

"Then she survived ten years after Leo was hidden."

He nodded.

"And during those ten years, she was looking for him."

Mara covered her mouth.

Leo whispered, "Why didn't she find me?"

Daniel looked toward him.

"Because your father hid the truth."

I shook my head.

"Thomas wasn't his father."

"Exactly."

Daniel pointed to another page.

"Your father changed the records."

"To protect him."

"Yes."

"Then why does the ledger say Leonard Hale?"

"Because Arthur Vale kept the original copy."

Mara looked toward the parked cars.

"Who has the other copy?"

Daniel's silence answered.

"Arthur's partners."

The nearest car door opened.

A man stepped onto the pavement.

He wasn't carrying a weapon that I could see.

He simply stood beneath the streetlight.

Then he raised a hand.

Daniel whispered, "That's Marcus Redd."

"Who is he?"

"My father's lawyer."

Mara stared.

"He should be seventy."

"He is."

"Then why does he look younger?"

Daniel gave her a bitter smile.

"Because he's not Marcus Redd."

The man across the street started walking toward us.

Daniel took the ledger.

"We need to move."

"Where?"

"Somewhere he can't follow."

I looked at the house.

"My car is in the garage."

"No."

Daniel pointed toward the rear lane.

"They'll expect that."

Leo spoke quietly.

"My mom has another car."

Mara shook her head.

"It's at the house."

"No."

Leo reached into his backpack.

"She gave me the keys."

He pulled out a small ring.

Mara stared at them.

"When?"

"This morning."

"You never told me."

"I forgot."

One key had a blue plastic tag.

Daniel recognized it.

"That's the community center."

Mara looked at him.

"Why would we go there?"

"Because Evelyn rented a room there."

Daniel's voice became quiet.

"She left something behind."

"What?"

"A recording."

We moved through the back garden.

The man across the street had reached the gate.

He called out.

"Daniel."

Daniel didn't turn.

"Keep moving."

We reached the alley.

A second man appeared at the far end.

We stopped.

They had anticipated us.

Daniel looked at the ledger.

Then at the boy.

Then at me.

"There's one way out."

"Where?"

He pointed toward my old greenhouse.

"Underneath it."

I stared.

"I built that greenhouse myself."

"Not all of it."

He kicked aside a loose paving stone.

Beneath it was a metal ring.

I had never seen it.

He pulled.

A hatch opened.

Darkness waited beneath.

Leo looked at the opening.

"Where does it go?"

Daniel answered.

"To the community center."

I looked at him.

"That's impossible."

"Not anymore."

Behind us, footsteps entered the garden.

Daniel climbed down.

Mara followed with Leo.

I went next.

Before closing the hatch, I looked back at my house.

For twenty-six years I had believed it was simply where I lived.

Now I understood that someone had built it around a secret.

And someone had spent nineteen years making sure that secret stayed buried.
