PART 5 – Daniel Raised the Gun, but the Ledger Revealed a Secret About My Dead Father That Changed Who the Victim Really Was

Daniel stood in the doorway with the gun held low, almost casually, as though he had walked into a room where people were having an unpleasant argument rather than discovering a hidden archive beneath my house. The corridor behind him was narrow enough that there was no way past him.

Leo pressed against Mara's side.

I stared at the weapon.

"Put it down, Daniel."

He gave me a tired smile.

"If I intended to shoot you, Mr. Hale, we'd be having a different conversation."

"That's supposed to make me feel better?"

"No."

His eyes moved to the ledger.

"That is."

Mara stepped in front of Leo.

"You followed me."

"I followed the only person who knew where the entrance was."

"You said you didn't know."

"I said I didn't know where Evelyn hid it."

Daniel entered the room and shut the steel door behind him.

The click of the latch sounded far louder than it should have.

I kept my eyes on him.

"You've been looking for this for years."

"Not me."

He glanced at Mara.

"She has."

Mara's jaw tightened.

"You know that's a lie."

Daniel laughed quietly.

"Do I?"

He pointed the gun toward the ledger.

"Open it."

Mara didn't move.

Daniel raised the weapon slightly.

"Please."

There was something different in his voice now. Not anger. Fear.

That surprised me.

Mara opened the ledger.

Daniel stepped closer.

He didn't look at the first pages. He went straight to the back, turning them quickly until he found a section marked with a faded red tab.

His finger traced a line.

"Read it."

Mara looked at the page.

Her face changed.

"What?"

She didn't answer.

Daniel looked at me.

"Your father made an agreement with my father."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"About what?"

"Children."

The word hung between us.

Leo looked from one adult to another.

Daniel lowered his voice.

"Twenty years ago, there were families in this town who needed money. There were also families who wanted children and didn't want questions asked."

Mara shook her head.

"That's not what happened."

"You weren't there."

"I've read Evelyn's letters."

"And you believed them."

"Because they were hers."

Daniel's expression hardened.

"She was lying."

I looked down at the ledger.

The entries were written in columns, each child assigned a letter rather than a full name. Payments appeared beside dates, followed by names of guardians.

My father's name appeared repeatedly.

Thomas Hale.

I had spent fifteen years thinking my father had been a stern but decent man who kept secrets because he disliked discussing the past.

Now his name was sitting in a ledger beneath my kitchen.

"What did my father do?"

Daniel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, he looked at Leo.

"Ask him."

Leo stared at him.

Daniel's voice softened.

"Ask him why his mother has spent ten years telling him I was dangerous."

Mara stepped forward.

"Don't."

Daniel ignored her.

"Ask him why he was given the name Leonard Hale."

Leo's eyes widened.

I felt the blood leave my face.

"You said that name was false."

Mara looked at me.

"It is."

Daniel shook his head.

"No. It's the name on the original record."

I turned toward the ledger.

The entry read:

*Leonard Hale — transferred to Thomas Hale — 2007.**

Below it was another line.

*Biological mother: Evelyn Vale.**

Mara whispered, "No."

Daniel looked at her.

"You knew."

"I knew Evelyn had a child."

"You knew the child was him."

"I didn't know where he went."

Daniel looked at Leo.

"I did."

Leo backed away.

"You aren't my father?"

Daniel's expression became unreadable.

"No."

The answer came quietly.

"I'm not."

Leo looked at Mara.

"Then who is?"

Mara closed her eyes.

I saw the moment she understood what the ledger meant.

"Evelyn," she whispered.

Leo stared at her.

"Who?"

"Your grandmother."

The silence that followed felt impossible.

Daniel lowered the gun slightly.

"I spent years trying to prove what happened to my father. He claimed the children had been placed with families legally. He claimed your father was one of the guardians."

I looked at the ledger.

"Was he?"

"Yes."

Daniel turned toward me.

"But he wasn't the worst one."

He flipped several pages backward.

Another name appeared.

*Arthur Vale.**

Daniel's father.

Beside it were dozens of payments.

Some were enormous.

Others were accompanied by initials.

I recognized one.

E.V.

"Evelyn recorded everything," Mara said.

"Exactly."

Daniel closed the ledger.

"That's why she disappeared."

"No," Mara said. "You told me she ran."

"I lied."

Her face went rigid.

"Where is she?"

Daniel looked at the floor.

"Dead."

Leo made a small sound.

Mara gripped the table.

"When?"

"Nine years ago."

"How?"

"An accident."

"You expect me to believe that?"

"No."

Daniel looked at me.

"I expect you to understand why I needed this book."

I felt anger rising.

"You broke into my property. You threatened a child. You lied to his mother."

"I didn't hurt him."

"You terrified him."

Daniel's eyes dropped.

For the first time, shame crossed his face.

"I know."

He set the gun on the table.

The gesture was so unexpected that nobody moved.

Then he pulled a folded document from his jacket.

"My father left this."

He placed it beside the ledger.

"It was found after his death."

Mara unfolded it.

Her eyes moved across the page.

Then she looked at Daniel.

"Why didn't you show me this before?"

"Because I didn't know whether you were involved."

"I wasn't."

"I know that now."

I stepped closer.

"What does it say?"

Mara handed me the paper.

It was a statement.

Arthur Vale admitted that children had been transferred through a network of private guardians. He named several people involved.

Thomas Hale was listed.

But beneath his name was a handwritten note.

*Thomas attempted to stop the final transfer.**

I read it again.

My father's name had been followed by another sentence.

*He kept Leonard hidden until the arrangement could be undone.**

I looked at Leo.

My father had not stolen him.

He had hidden him.

But why?

Daniel answered before I could ask.

"Because your father knew the people behind the network would kill anyone who exposed them."

Mara's voice broke.

"Then why didn't he tell us?"

"Because he thought the danger would pass."

I looked at the ledger.

"It didn't."

"No."

Daniel picked up the gun.

I tensed.

He turned it around and held it out to me.

The grip pointed toward my hand.

"Then take it."

I didn't.

Daniel placed it on the table.

"I'm done threatening people."

Before anyone could respond, a loud metallic bang came from the corridor.

Daniel spun toward the door.

Someone was outside.

A second bang struck the steel.

Mara grabbed Leo.

Daniel whispered one word.

"Run."

The door handle began to turn.
