PART 7 – The Messages I Had Saved Became Harder to Look At Once I Understood What Cole Had Been Trying to Prove About Me

I spent the afternoon trying to keep the children occupied.

Emily helped with lunch.

She found clean clothes for them.

She made space for their things in her apartment.

The ordinary work gave me something to focus on.

Still, I kept checking my phone.

I didn't want to miss a message from Daniel.

I didn't want to lose anything Cole had sent.

The photograph remained saved.

I opened it once.

Then I closed it.

I didn't need to look at it again to remember what it showed.

The message had hurt me because it was so direct.

There was no explanation.

No attempt to hide what he wanted me to see.

But now the photograph was only one part of what I had to consider.

I remembered Daniel telling me about the trust office.

Cole had tried to make other people believe I was incapable of managing my own affairs.

That information changed the way I looked at the messages between us.

I began to notice how often I had apologized for asking questions.

How often I had explained my feelings as if they were an inconvenience.

How often I had let Cole tell me what I meant.

I had saved messages before.

I had kept them because I didn't want to forget what had been said.

At the time, I hadn't thought of them as evidence.

I had thought of them as reminders.

Something I could look at when Cole told me that a conversation had happened differently.

Now I understood why preserving them mattered.

I didn't know what a lawyer would need.

I didn't know which messages would be important.

But I wasn't going to erase them.

I looked at the photograph again.

I noticed how my hands had begun to shake.

I put the phone down.

I was ashamed of how much I still wanted Cole to explain himself.

Part of me wanted him to say that he had made a terrible mistake.

Part of me wanted him to admit that he had been trying to control me.

Part of me wanted him to understand that I had not left because I stopped caring.

I had left because I was frightened.

And because I had begun to believe that the children and I needed something different.

I couldn't make him understand that by sending another message.

I couldn't make him take responsibility by arguing with him.

I had tried that before.

It had never changed anything.

Emily came into the room and asked whether I needed help.

I told her I was thinking about the messages.

She sat beside me.

I explained that I wanted to keep everything, but I didn't know what to do with it.

She told me I didn't have to sort through it that afternoon.

I could wait for the attorney.

That was sensible.

I had been trying to handle every part of the situation at once.

I wanted to understand the trust.

I wanted to know what Cole had submitted.

I wanted to decide what to do about the apartment.

I wanted to know what the future would look like for the children.

None of those questions could be answered immediately.

I had to let some of them wait.

I put the phone away.

Then I helped Emily with the children.

Noah wanted to be carried.

Lily needed a change.

I did those things.

I listened to them.

I tried to remember that they were still children, even though the rest of my life had suddenly become complicated.

I didn't want them to feel responsible for my fear.

I didn't want them to grow up believing that the trouble between their parents was something they had caused.

That was one thing I could control.

I could be careful with the words I used around them.

I could make sure they were safe.

I could keep the evidence without making every moment of the day about Cole.

That evening, I checked my phone again.

There was still no answer I needed to give him.

I had not deleted anything.

I had not confronted him.

I had followed Daniel's advice.

And I had begun to understand that doing those things did not make me cruel.

It made me responsible for myself.
