The next conversation with Daniel came after I had spent another long stretch of waiting.
I was tired.
The children were tired.
Emily had done what she could to make the apartment feel comfortable for us.
But I still felt as if I were living between two places.
The home I had left.
The place where I was trying to make the children feel safe.
I didn't know when that would change.
Daniel told me that he had been working on arranging independent legal help.
I asked whether the attorney would be able to explain the trust and Cole's attempts to gain authority.
He said that was the purpose.
I wanted to know what I was dealing with.
I wanted to understand what had happened without having to depend on Cole's version.
I asked Daniel whether there was anything I should do before speaking with the lawyer.
He reminded me to keep the messages and photographs.
He told me not to confront Cole.
He said the children should remain somewhere safe while I worked through the next steps.
I told him I understood.
Then I asked about the emergency provision again.
I wanted to be certain that I could receive help without Cole being able to control it.
Daniel explained that my grandmother had made arrangements for that possibility.
The trust could provide financial support for my protection.
It could also help arrange legal representation that was independent of my husband.
I felt grateful.
I also felt the weight of what that meant.
The inheritance was no longer just money I had received from my grandmother.
It was part of the way I could begin making decisions without depending on Cole.
I had never wanted to use it for something like this.
I had wanted my marriage to work.
I had wanted the children to grow up with both parents in the same home.
But wanting those things did not mean I could ignore what had happened.
Daniel said the lawyer would help me understand what choices were available.
I thanked him.
When the call ended, I looked at the children.
They were sitting near Emily, playing quietly.
I had spent so much of the past day thinking about Cole that I needed to remind myself what mattered most.
Noah and Lily.
Their safety.
Their future.
I couldn't promise them that everything would be easy.
I couldn't promise that their father would understand my decision.
I could promise that I would not ignore the things that frightened me.
I could promise that I would ask for help when I needed it.
I could promise that I would try to make choices based on what was happening, not on what I hoped Cole might become.
Those promises felt more honest.
I looked at my phone.
The photograph was still there.
I didn't delete it.
I didn't send it to anyone.
I kept it because I wanted the truth preserved.
The messages were there, too.
I had no idea how much they would matter later.
I only knew that I shouldn't make them disappear.
That evening, I sat with Emily for a while.
She asked whether I was feeling any better.
I told her I was still frightened.
I told her I didn't know what would happen when Cole realized I was serious.
She didn't tell me that he would change.
She didn't tell me that I should go back.
She said we would take things one step at a time.
I believed her.
For the first time since the photograph arrived, I didn't feel as though I had to explain why I was afraid.
I could simply be afraid.
I could still make decisions.
The children needed their routines.
I helped get them ready for bed.
I checked their blankets.
I listened until they were quiet.
Then I returned to the room where I had left my phone.
I looked at it without opening the photograph.
I thought about my grandmother.
She had been gone for four years.
I had missed her.
I had misunderstood her.
But she had left me something that mattered far beyond the money.
She had left me a way to seek help when I needed it.
I wasn't ready to know everything that would happen next.
I wasn't ready to return to the apartment.
I wasn't ready to speak to Cole.
But I was ready to stop pretending that the problem could be solved by keeping quiet.
That was enough for that night.
I put the phone away.
I stayed with the children.
And I waited for the lawyer to help me understand what came next.
