PART 9 – The Morning I Finally Asked for Independent Advice, I Realized How Much of My Marriage Had Been Built Around Keeping Cole Comfortable

The children woke early again.

I had barely slept, but Noah was already reaching for me, and Lily was making small sounds from the other side of the room.

I got up.

There was no point pretending I could rest while they were awake.

Emily helped me prepare breakfast.

She didn't ask whether I had changed my mind about leaving.

She didn't ask when I planned to return to the apartment.

She simply helped me get through the morning.

I was grateful for that.

I had spent years feeling as though every decision needed to be explained before I could make it.

Even asking for help had become something I felt I needed to justify.

Now my sister was helping me without demanding that I defend myself.

It was a small difference.

It mattered.

I checked my phone while the children ate.

I was waiting to hear from Daniel about the legal arrangements.

There was still no clear answer about what would happen next.

I knew that the attorney would need to understand the situation before offering advice.

I also knew that I couldn't keep waiting for everything to become simple.

The photograph Cole had sent was still saved.

The messages were still there.

And the information about the trust remained in my mind, impossible to ignore.

Eight months of attempts.

That was what Daniel had told me.

Eight months during which Cole had been trying to obtain authority over my inheritance while telling me there was nothing to worry about.

I wondered how he had managed to keep those things separate in his mind.

Perhaps he believed he was entitled to what I had inherited.

Perhaps he had convinced himself that his concerns about me justified what he was doing.

I couldn't know.

I wasn't going to invent an explanation for him.

I had spent too much time doing that already.

Emily noticed that I had stopped eating.

She asked whether I was thinking about Cole.

I told her I was trying to understand how long he had been doing things behind my back.

She sat down across from me.

She said I didn't need to figure out his reasons before deciding what I needed.

I looked at her.

That was something I should have understood years earlier.

I had always wanted to know why Cole behaved the way he did.

If I could find the reason, I thought, perhaps I could fix the problem.

I had treated his explanations as instructions.

I had treated his moods as warnings.

I had treated my own unhappiness as something that needed to be managed quietly.

I wasn't proud of that.

But I could see it more clearly now.

I told Emily that I was afraid of what would happen when Cole realized I wasn't coming back immediately.

She didn't pretend to know.

She said we would deal with what happened when we knew more.

For once, I didn't need someone to promise me that everything would work out.

I needed someone to help me face what was actually happening.

That morning, I decided I would follow through with the legal advice Daniel had arranged.

I would ask questions.

I would listen to the answers.

And I would stop assuming that Cole's version of events was the only one that mattered.

The decision didn't make me feel brave.

It made me feel nervous.

But I was going to do it anyway.
